3. Why we process data (purposes & legal bases)

We process personal data to:

  • Provide the Services (account, membership, events, ticketing, messaging, marketplace, Magazine) — contract performance and/or legitimate interests;
  • Personalize discovery and matchmaking within the community — legitimate interests and, where required, consent;
  • Process payments and prevent fraud — contract, legal obligation, legitimate interests;
  • Support, safety, and moderation — legitimate interests and legal obligation;
  • Analytics and product improvement (including aggregated or anonymized analysis) — legitimate interests;
  • Marketing of Mae where permitted — consent or legitimate interests, with opt-out where required;
  • Create, edit, publish, and archive Experience Materials — see Section 4.

4. Experience recordings, podcasts & resource archive

Mae documents cultural Experiences. With your participation in an Experience, and as further described in the Terms of Use, we may capture and process Experience Materials that include personal data.

Uses. We may use Experience Materials to:

  • produce podcasts, audio essays, video series, and editorial stories (including Mae Magazine);
  • build and maintain a resources / cultural archive for members, partners, research, education, and storytelling;
  • promote Mae, Experiences, artists, venues, and partner productions across our channels and selected third-party platforms;
  • improve facilitation, safety, and product quality (including internal review of how Experiences run).

Legal bases. Depending on the context, we rely on: (a) performance of the agreement governing participation in Experiences and the Services; (b) our legitimate interests in documenting, promoting, and archiving Mae’s cultural program, balanced against your rights; and (c) consent, where we ask for it (for example, a specific release, optional interview, or marketing opt-in). Where a venue or partner imposes additional rules, we may also process data as needed to comply with those arrangements.

Your choices. If an Experience offers an opt-out from photography or recording, follow the instructions given on site or in the event materials. You may contact us to object to certain promotional uses of your likeness where GDPR objection rights apply. Objecting may not require us to delete materials already published, licensed to partners, or retained in a lawful archive, but we will review requests in good faith.

Do not secretly record others. Participants must not make private recordings of other attendees in violation of applicable law or Experience house rules.

5. How we share data

  • Service providers (hosting, analytics, email, SMS, customer support, payment processing such as Stripe, cloud media storage);
  • Event hosts, artists, venues, and partners as needed to run an Experience or production you join;
  • Other users according to profile visibility and features you use (messaging, public profiles, listings);
  • Legal and safety disclosures when required or to protect rights, users, or Mae;
  • Business transfers in connection with a merger, acquisition, or asset sale.

We do not sell personal data as a commercial product. Experience Materials used in public storytelling may be visible to anyone who accesses those channels.

6. International transfers

We may process data on servers or with providers outside the EEA. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for transfers to countries without an adequacy decision.

7. Retention

We retain personal data as long as needed for the purposes above, including account life, legal/accounting retention, dispute handling, and — for Experience Materials — the duration of our editorial, promotional, and archival program, unless a shorter period is required or a valid erasure request applies and no exemption prevents deletion.

8. Security

We use industry-standard measures (access controls, encryption in transit where appropriate, and provider security practices). No method of transmission or storage is fully secure; please use a strong password and protect your devices.

9. Your rights (GDPR / EEA)

If GDPR applies to you, you may have the right to:

  • access your personal data;
  • rectify inaccurate data;
  • erase data in certain cases;
  • restrict or object to certain processing;
  • data portability;
  • withdraw consent where processing is consent-based;
  • lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority.

To exercise rights, email hello@mae.community. We may need to verify your identity. Some rights are limited where we must keep data for legal claims, security, or freedom of expression / archival purposes connected to Experience Materials.

10. Children

The Services are not directed to children under 16 (or the higher age required in your country for information-society consent). We do not knowingly collect their data. Contact us if you believe we have done so.

11. Cookies & similar technologies

Our websites may use essential cookies for session and security, and optionally analytics or preference cookies. You can control cookies via browser settings; disabling some cookies may limit functionality.

12. Changes

We may update this Policy. The “Updated” date will change when we do. Significant changes may also be notified in the App or by email.
